Dr. Javier Valencia
Dr. Javier Valencia is a specialist in infectious and tropical diseases and an investigator at the Asociación Civil Impacta Salud y Educacion since 2012. He has been actively involved in the implementation and conduction of several NIH-funded clinical trials at the Barranco CRS and San Miguel CRS research centers in Lima, Peru, serving as the principal investigator for studies related to HIV prevention, preventive vaccines, and treatments such as ACTG 5279, ACTG A5288, HVTN 114, HPTN 083, HVTN 706/HPX3002, and ACTG 5332. This has allowed him to gain broad experience in clinical trial management, leadership, and administrative skills, leading to his promotion to site leader of San Miguel CRS in March 2021. As a specialist in infectious diseases, he has developed numerous skills in the clinical care of people with HIV, individuals at high risk of acquiring HIV, patients with tuberculosis, as well as infections in immunocompromised individuals. As a result, he was selected as a consulting physician for the management of people with HIV by the national HIV program of the Ministry of Health of Peru, providing antiretroviral management recommendations to doctors in health centers with challenging cases. Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked at the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases in Lima, which allowed him to gain more experience in the management of vaccines and infections in immunocompromised individuals.
Finally, with the experience gained in research and the motivation to disseminate its results to the involved communities, he was invited to join the Community Advisory Board (CAB) for the NIH-funded UCLA-Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) in October 2022. This fact keeps alive his spirit of researching for the benefit of communities.
